Cultural Connections: To bring you up to date with the background of the establishment of this day, during Reunion V at the Open Forum a proposal was made by George Henderson of New Zealand: "that a day be set aside to celebrate our Anglo-Indian heritage, culture and history." This proposal was adopted by the Management Committee to further research this, so as to agree on a date linking this Day with some major historical fact/event in the history of the Anglo-Indian community. Following research conducted by the Admin Committee in Perth in consultation with Anglo-Indian Association NSW and myself, the date of the 2 August was agreed. This date being the date of the Promulgation of the Government of India Act 1935 defining an Anglo-Indian in pre-Partition India. Even though there are many opinions about the term Anglo-Indian , it is in the Govt of India Act of 1935 where the term was first formally defined in a contemporary sense. Later this definition was used in the Indian constitution and is still relevant today. The All India Anglo-Indian Association, New Delhi, is aware of the proposal and sees no objection to the announcement of 2nd August as Anglo-Indian Day. I would appreciate your promotion of this day both via your Organisation's Publication and by conducting functions either on this day or around the time to celebrate and give thanks for our history and heritage. This may be expressed in many forms appropriate to the Anglo-Indian ethos; ie social get togethers, thanksgiving services, picnics, sporting activities, concerts, symposiums, debates, book headings, movie sessions, cultural quizzes etc. This "small step" will one day be seen as a "huge step" towards the consolidation, unity and strengthening of our wide-spread community and I look forward to your support in this "first" for the Anglo-Indian community.
